Before You Ask
FAMILY PORTRAIT QUESTIONS
- What happens if my toddler has a meltdown or my kids won't sit still?
- Don't worry at all—this is completely normal and expected. The best family photos happen when kids are allowed to play, explore, and be themselves rather than forced to hold a stiff pose. We never scold or rush. We play games, take breaks, and let kids run around. With over thirty years of experience, I know how to capture genuine laughter and micro-expressions in between the chaotic moments.
- How long does a family portrait session last?
- Most family sessions last between 45 and 90 minutes. That gives us plenty of time to capture a variety of groupings and candid moments without stretching past the attention span of younger children. For large multi-generational groups or multi-location sessions, we can customize the timeline to suit your needs.
- What should we wear for our family portraits?
- We recommend coordinating colors rather than matching identically (avoid everyone wearing the exact same white polo shirt and khaki pants). Choose a cohesive palette of 3 to 4 complementary tones—such as warm earth tones, navy, cream, sage, or soft jewel tones. Avoid loud graphic logos and ultra-fine tight patterns that cause digital distortion. Comfortable shoes are a must for outdoor park and French Quarter sessions.
- Can we bring our family dog to the shoot?
- Yes! Dogs are an integral part of many families and are very welcome at our outdoor sessions in City Park, Audubon Park, and on neighborhood walks. We suggest bringing treats, a favorite toy, and a helper or friend who can hold the leash if we want to take a few photos of just the humans.
- How far in advance should we book, especially for the holidays?
- Fall in New Orleans (October through December) and spring (March through May) are our busiest seasons for family portraiture due to pleasant weather and holiday card deadlines. We recommend booking 4 to 8 weeks in advance for weekend slots. If you are visiting from out of town on a holiday weekend, reach out as early as possible.
- What if it rains or Louisiana weather doesn't cooperate?
- New Orleans weather can be unpredictable, but pop-up showers often pass quickly. We monitor the forecast closely in the days leading up to your shoot. If heavy rain or extreme weather occurs, we will reschedule to our mutually agreed backup date or move the shoot into our climate-controlled Tremé studio.
- Can we shoot extended, multi-generational family groups?
- Absolutely. We frequently photograph multi-generational reunions involving grandparents, adult siblings, in-laws, and cousins. We organize the shoot efficiently, photographing the full extended group first, and then breaking down into individual family units, couple portraits, and sibling pictures.
- Do we have to purchase expensive print packages, or do we get digital files?
- You receive full-resolution digital files with every session. Your images are delivered in a private, password-protected online gallery with full personal printing rights and zero watermarks on the high-res image files. You can download your files immediately to share, print holiday cards, or order archival museum-grade wall art and prints directly through our professional lab.
